I found it amazing! The mother of two tells Stan Turner she wants to kill Rod. Stan asks his partner Paula Waters to handle the case as his wife Rebekah is ailing and he is doing a pro bono probate involving the estate of the late Herbert Wolf. Pandora Alvarez and her five children arrive at the law firm.

She wants to sue Icaro Melendez, owner of a sweat shop where her fiftyish late husband Romildo worked; he died from an overdose but she insists he did not do drugs. Stan assigns his former secretary but now law degree associate Jodie Marshal to handle the case in which DPD closed the case due to a lack of evidence.
The Thompson case takes a deadly spin when Rod's corpse is found. The murder weapon is an ice pick just like the tool that killed their client's first husband Randy Rhymes. The Alvarez case proves more dangerous as Melendez has ties with a Mexican drug cartel helping to eliminate anyone who gets too close to his business.
This is a fabulous novel with Paula and Jodie sharing the lead with the main star. The female attorneys work the law differently from Stan, but share his ethics. With three intriguing cases, sub-genre readers will enjoy William Manchee's latest novel "Deadly Defiance" as underdogs with counsel defy the "norm".
Jun 22, Skjam! Disclosure: I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway on the premise that I would review it. This is the tenth volume in a series about Stan Turner, a Dallas based attorney for the firm of Turner and Waters. Which might be defensible—except that her first husband died of the same thing! This book is more of a procedural than a fair play mystery, full of filings and legal maneuverings.
There are some exciting scenes involving a Mexican drug cartel. I think the book could have used another editorial pass. The pacing is better in the later chapters.
"Why isn't my state listed?"
A decent read, but overall a little unsatisfying. Jan 21, David Caldwell rated it really liked it Shelves: won-it-on-goodreads-first-reads , series , suspense. I won a copy on Goodreads Firstreads. Including a stage where, the artist can consistently produce pleasing artwork that appeals to most people. But that artist just lacks that indefinable but essential spark that keeps them from being a master. They will always produce product that sells but will never be known as top of their field.
The story is a solid story with interesting characters. There are no technical problems and only a few glitches even a couple of words were left out. But it just seems to lack something that keeps it from making it to the level of say a John Grisham novel. Again,There is nothing wrong with the book,I just don't see it becoming a runaway bestseller.
It is the tenth book in the series. Stan Turner,Jodie Marshall, and Paula Waters have multiple cases that they have to work on during this story. They have a family that thinks their father was killed by the company where he has worked for years,a woman who is accused of murdering her husband, and having to look for a missing heir. On top of this, Stan's wife comes down with a mysterious illness.
There are Mexican drug cartels, illegal alien smuggling, loan sharks, and other dangers for the trio to avoid. A solid story,multi-dimensional characters and a fast moving plot makes this a dependable read. You may not be bowled over by it, but you won't be dissapointed either. Boy, this mystery book has it all. Stan Turner is an attorney whose office handles all kinds of cases. Many of the cases he takes are filled with danger for Stan and the attorneys who work with him. He may be a little unusal as he works with 2 females attorneys.
The ladies sometimes can find out information that might be difficult for male attorneys to discover. S Boy, this mystery book has it all. She was angry with her soon to be ex, but would she stab him 12 times with an ice pick? Pandora Alvarez is the widow of an illegal immigrant.
Stan Turner Series
Her husband was murdered and she and her family need money Stan and his staff try to get Mr. Alvarez's boss, Icaro Melendez, for importing illegals and not paying them very well and drugs. Even with the FBI and local police involved, is it really wise to have the attorneys trying to implicate Alvarez?
Then there is the case that a judge asks Stan to take to help resolve the care of the estate of Herb Willis. Herb died and left no will, but some people think he had an illigitimate son If there is a child, who is it and where is he. If this isn't enough, Stan's staff is trying to help convict a local loan shark, who isn't a nice person. Which one of these people will get to Stan and his staff first? And by the way, though out the story Stan's wife is ill and doesn't want to admit it. She is a former nurse and you know nurses make the worst patients.
Deadly Defiance has three cases going on as well as Stan Turner's personnel dilemma. Stan Turner, Paula Waters and Jodie Marshall have to represent with a Ice Pick Widow, confrontation with the Mexican Drug Cartel and illegal sweat shop and locating a unknown heir for the probate case while Stan is trying to figure out what is wrong with his wife's health. I'm just surprised that none of the television networks have considered producing a television series for the Stan Turner series. There is a Deadly Defiance has three cases going on as well as Stan Turner's personnel dilemma.
There is a familiarity of this being another "Perry Mason series". I would definitely be interested to see this series on television. I wondered how I could have missed the Stan Turner Mystery series. This is the kind of books I usually read and I can't believe I didn't know about it. If the prior books are anything like book 10, I have a lot of reading to do.
There are twists and turns of how each of these three cases turned out hint, hint: Perry Mason. Deadly Defiance kept me guessing of who has the motives and opportunity. Another thing, it is first time I ever trying listening to an entire audio book. One of the main reason, I found out from the past audio book, the whole book is not read. Some portions of the book were skip.
Yeah, I have compare the audio book and the printed book to see if there was any difference. Secondly, I don't listen to audio book is that it depends on who the reader s is. The reader makes all the difference to the audio book. Jun 15, Glenda rated it really liked it. Paula is wondering if the firm will be paid at all for representing Ms. He has millions and his wife and two brothers who are heirs do not want this new family member found. Plus with Jodie just passing the bar she needs all the assistance she can get with her case.
Icaro Melendez is connected with the Mexican Drug cartel and his business is just a front. When it arrived, I was shocked to see that it was actually an audio book. It seems I mistakenly entered the wrong giveaway. Nevertheless, since I was lucky enough to receive it for free, I thought I'd give it a whirl. I always assumed that audio books were for those who had difficulty reading or had long commutes.
Boy, was I mistaken. Audio books are great to listen to while doing some mundane task. The enunciation and inflection of their voices were great! The drawbacks of an audio book? All said and done, I would not be opposed to listening to more audio books. Now for the review of the actual book…. It has a good bit of side action that helps build the characters. I love that there were several stories happening at the same time. Apr 22, D rated it liked it.
I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads giveaways. Although it is part of a series, it is not necessary to read them in order. The cover of this book states it is "A Stan Turner Mystery". However, there is no mystery to solve. The storyline of each case meshes together nicely and keeps the reader interested in the outcome of each. There were some editing issues. At the end of Chapter 7, Stan arrives home to a medical emergency and the next chapter starts with him back at his law firm.
Two chapters later, the reader time travels back and Stan is calling for an ambulance. Another issue is a story line revolving around Jodie, who is an attorney at the firm, but the name "Paula" is used in error. Also, Paula is the name of Stan Turner's law partner and Paula is the name of opposing counsel in one of the cases. They have different last names but it is unnecessarily confusing for the reader. I enjoyed reading this book but I didn't warm up to the characters to the point where I would like to continue the series. If I came across another "Stan Turner" book, I would probably read it but would not go out of my way to buy it.

This is the tenth book in the series and I will have to say I will have to get each and everyone of his other books for this was such a delight to read. This novel is intriguing, wonderfully fast-paced. This book kept you glues to your seat not wanting to put the book down … It kept you in grossed with what was happening in the story that you lost time and place and became one with the story as if you were there along with the wonderful thought out charters.
