It does a great job of reminding us, from a theological perspective, what it takes to deal with sin and life struggles so that growth is the result.
How People Grow: What the Bible Reveals About Personal Growth
But, it's very repetitive and not terribly inspiring. It has helped remind me that seeking growth is God's plan for humans. I embrace the hunger He's put in my heart for growth so I can be at peace with other people. Very good material here with a scriptural premise and excellent working examples. I recommend frequently to people, and it was recommended to me after a severe trauma.

I felt instantly at home with the authors, as they take a balanced and reverent view of scripture and of the human condition. I bought other books by the author after getting only halfway through this one. This book deserves a place of honor next to my C. Lewis collection - but it's being lent out because it's that good. I would even purchase multiple copies to give away. For my entire life, I've been struggling with the concepts of "trying hard to grow" and "letting the Holy Spirit do the work". I always end up trying very hard to grow and end up extremely exhausted and at the same time thinking that I'm not really letting the Holy Spirit do the work here But if I don't work hard and "let the Holy Spirit work" then I will just stay lazy and not grow.
I was sooooo frustrated and did not know what to do. I was also very frustrated at people who just stay stagnant and do not grow! I mean, why won't they try harder!!! Discipline themselves and grow! Here I am, trying so hard to grow, but they are just so lazy and do nothing much. But boy, after reading this book, I felt soooooooo relieved and full of hope for my and other people's future! This book really revealed to me how God designed us to grow!!! It is through the Body of Christ! I used to just use guilt to drive myself and sometimes others to growth, which doesn't really work, and in the end you feel exhausted.
Also, it's not God's intention to make us feel condemned anyway! Jesus came to save us from condemnation!! We are now under Grace, not Law anymore! I am just so thankful for God bringing to me this book I have a whole new perspective on growth both for myself and others!! Thank you Dr. Cloud and Townsend! This book was an eye-opener.
I read it with my prayer partner, one chapter a week. We discussed thoroughly each week and I dare say we grew! Well written with a LOT of "stories" that not only captivated us, but helped us remember what we'd read so we could begin applying it. Cloud and Dr. Townsend hit the mark combining the inspiration of Scripture, the secular theory of psychology, and most importantly the gritty reality of clinical practice. Useful for any evangelical Christian in any leadership position from pastor to small group leader.
