Oh my gosh this is just what I've been looking for: A thorough overview of Cognitive Linguistics that's textbook-like in that it's highly accessible it doesn't assume prior knowledge of cognitive linguistic OR any linguistic research and theory, actually and even has exercises at the ends of the chapters, yet simultaneously advanced enough that even a person close to finishing her PhD in essentially just this area still finds it extremely useful.

Cognitive Linguistics: An Introduction

Sure, a lot of it is review for me, but it's thorough, intelligent, contains numerous in-text citations just like any "serious" academic work would, and it's doing exactly what I wanted it do, which is helping me solidify a broad overview of what cognitive linguistics is and does, making sure I know the seminal works and most famous researchers in particular sub-areas of it, and filling in any gaps or misunderstandings in my knowledge.

I especially appreciate the annotated Further Reading lists at the end of each chapter. Even though the notes about each work are only lines long, they make a big difference compared to no explanation and just a list of works in helping me know which I should prioritize.

Amazon is incorrectly listing this as being written only by Vyvyan Evans. The book is divided into four parts and is therefore suitable for a range of different course types, both in terms of length and level, as well as in terms of focus. In addition to defining the field, the text also includes appropriate critical evaluation. Complementary and potentially competing approaches are explored both within the cognitive approach and beyond it. For example conceptual metaphor theory is compared and contrasted with conceptual blending theory in terms of methodology, assumptions, scope and phenomena.

Toon meer Toon minder. Times Higher Education Supplement This book provides a clear, careful and comprehensive introduction to what the authors call the 'cognitive linguistics enterprise', including cognitive semantics and cognitive grammar, synchronic and diachronic approaches, linguistic and socio-cultural perspectives, universal and language specific matters, older topics such as prototype theory, newer ones, such as blending and much more.

The approach adopted is problem oriented rather than theory oriented. This means that cognitive, formal and functional approaches are not pitted against each other but are instead pitted against problems that have to be solved. This approach will draw readers into a learning process that will keep them interested in cognitive linguistics well beyond this book. The reader is made familiar with the basic principles that underlie the cognitive enterprise and with the vast range of approaches within this field.

Constructions The book offers a thorough, well-organized, clearly-written and engaging overview of cognitive linguistics which makes it suitable to serve as a textbook or as a reference tool.
