A predicted tripling of heat-related deaths in the UK over the next 30 years will require a drastic rethink of overheating in buildings and cooling provision in urban areas, a parliamentary select committee has warned. The move is part of its collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, which sees the solar driven system supplementing building air-conditioning load and offseting peak electrical consumption with clean, renewable energy.
It has been designed specifically for rooftop integration. The MCT is low profile, lightweight and has no external moving parts, and is claimed to be easy to maintain. Chromasun driven solar cooling systems are suitable for sunny climates when system sizes of between 50 and refrigeration tons are contemplated. Unlike larger solar concentrator systems, the MCT integrates on the rooftop because of its flat panel format unlike other commercially available high temperature solar thermal technologies, such as Parabolic Trough and Linear Fresnel, which are said to be expensive, complex, cumbersome and hard to maintain.

These traditional solar hot water products, such as flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, are architecturally compatible but cannot achieve the temperatures needed to drive double effect chillers and thermal storage systems. The MCT technology will be installed at the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company Distribution Management Centre, which is presently air-conditioned by conventional electrically driven screw type chillers which have significant peak power demands on hot days.

Use of passive cooling in buildings, B. Photovoltaic refrigeration, B. Solar cooling is most effective where it is most needed - in the tropics. Most developing countries lie in the hotter climatic regions, where cooling facilities are essential to promote the well-being, productivity and comfort of the population.

Paradoxically, solar air-conditioning can contribute significantly to the alleviation of the problem. This book includes fully detailed treatment of the theory and applications of the techniques involved: vapour absorption systems, solar absorption systems, solar absorption cooling, radiative cooling and desiccant cooling. Particular applications stressed include the use of passive cooling in buildings and the provision of efficient refrigeration facilities, the latter being essential for the storage of vaccines in health-care programmes for the eradication of infectious diseases throughout the developing world.
