Roger Bacon Seminar University of Pavia Edited by P. Bernardini and A. Rodolfi, , pp. Hardly anything seems more ordinary than the extended, concrete bodies populating the world of experience. Yet in explaining their manifest properties, physicists must appeal to entities radically unlike the bodies of our experience Yet in explaining their manifest properties, physicists must appeal to entities radically unlike the bodies of our experience.
Medieval Aristotelians too struggled to resolve tensions between the characteristics of the bodies we experience corporeality , and the principle that accounts for the way bodies are matter. This panel uncovers key difficulties that theorists of the High Middle Ages encountered when deploying Aristotelian notions of body to account for the bodies we experience. It thus offers a new window onto the fraying and reweaving of medieval paradigms of the physical world in the thirteenth century.
The first three papers examine tensions within medieval paradigms of corporeality. The last two papers treat two cases, concerning bodily properties, that challenged Aristotelian paradigms among thirteenth-century Christian and Islamic intellectuals. Therese Cory will examine how Parisian theorists sought to integrate light into their paradigm of corporeality. Our knowing is limited by physical and cognitive boundaries such as corporeal matter, individual particularity, natural exceptionality, and human reason.
The history of science may be viewed as the progressive evasion of these limits The history of science may be viewed as the progressive evasion of these limits through the formulation of theories and the creation of speculative and technical instruments that made possible a deep comprehension of reality that regularly transcended the reaches of sense experience and reason. This panel presents four examples of how, in the pre-modern period, a progressive liberation from the limits of knowing laid the basis for the emancipation of different disciplines and inventions.
At the same time, the continuity of questions on the limits of experience, knowledge, and science is accompanied by processes of discontinuity or even fracture in dense histories of opposing paradigms, contrasting perspectives, and tacit revolutions paving the road to the trailblazing developments which ranged from the telescope and the microscope to the discovery of new life worlds in the Americas and East Asia.
Yehuda Halper will portray how conceding the limits of metaphysics instigated a turn to the Aristotelian physical sciences and the questioning and rethinking their very foundations. Katja Krause will illustrate how novel connections between the medieval disciplines of medicine and zoology reshaped knowledge of the living body well into the Renaissance.
Nicola Polloni will discuss how medieval shifts in conceptions of prime matter moulded Early Modern mathematizations of physics.

This lecture is centred on the rise and development of the Arabic-into-Latin translation movement in Toledo in the second half of the twelfth century.
A short presentation of the cultural landscape of the twelfth-century philosophical A short presentation of the cultural landscape of the twelfth-century philosophical debate offers the context on which and from which the first translations were realised with the aim of providing new scientific and philosophical texts to the Latin scholars.
Mirroring the rising Greek-into-Arabic translations that were taking place between Southern Italy and the Byzantine territories, a first generation of translators spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and beyond , making available to the Latin audience a wide number of scientific writings.
A fact directly related to the developments of the political situation after the taking of Toledo and the Almoravid dominion in Al-Andalus. The passage to the second generation of Arabic-into-Latin translators is marked, too, by the socio-political situation of the Iberian Peninsula. In the second half of the century, the main centre of the translating activity is Toledo, and the lecture considers the different factors that made possible the establishment of the translation movement in that town.
